Engineering challenge

A brief that started out heavily structured had to end up reading as molten. But a sculpted organic surface fights precision stone setting: 20 VVS diamonds across three sizes need exact, flat seats that a freeform Blender sculpt does not give you.

Split the work by what each tool is actually good at. Rhino built the ring body to the client's measurements and subtracted the voids; Blender sculpted the surface into the liquid form; then the mesh went back into Rhino so the bezel subtractions were cut with CAD precision into an organically sculpted body. Printed in wax, direct investment cast, then polished and set by hand.

What started off as a heavily structure ask, developed into the ultimate display of fluidity. This custom set of rings was designed in Rhino 3D. I start with a basic ring body sized to the clients specifications then subtracted holes into the ring. I brought the ring into Blender to create sculpt the surface created the liquid effect depicted in the final result. Once the surface is complete I pulled the rings back into Rhino to create bezel setting subtractions for 3 sizes of VVS diamonds.

I then casted the ring using direct investment casting. Polished and set the diamonds.
